KARFREITAG GOTTESDIENST -
Several Members of Stammtisch attend Good Friday Services every year at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Wartburg, IL. The church. On Good Friday, each year, the congregation celebrates their Lower German (Plattdeutsch) ancestors by having a German language service. Formerly, the services were in Plattdeutsch, but nowadays the more recognized Hochdeutsch is used (mostly because it is hard to find Lutheran pastors who speak the lower dialect anymore - at least ones that are in this area). After the service, lunch is provided for free with a donation asked. Other than the Christmas service at Peace Lutheran in South St Louis County each year, German language services are very hard to find. Schade! |

About Us / Über uns
St. Louis Stammtisch is a group of people who want to have fun while speaking German as we try to solve the world's problems.
Wissenswertes
1. Over 40% of Americans have a German in their past, shouldn't German really be our national language!
2. Did you know that President Ronald Reagan proclaimed 6. October as German-American Day? German Reunification Day is 1. October and 9. November is Mauer Tag (the day the Berlin Wall came down). Swiss National Day is 1. August. Does anyone really care about Österreich? Well, not really...but, in case you are the minority of one, their national holiday is 26 October.
3. Germans are experts at abbreviation. They have to be with words like Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz (the law for the delegation of monitoring beef labeling). This was abbreviated to RkReÜAÜG. So much easier! Fortunately for us Stammtisch members, the EU has eliminated this word!
Because of words like this:
a. German's never say 5 words really fast; and,
b. German's don't play Scrabble TM
4. Tell someone today that you love them because life is short, but shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing.
5. While American children may be kind, German children are Kinder.
6. There are two kinds of music: German music and bad music (same applies to beer).
7. Everything has an end, but a sausage has two. Alles hat eine Ende, nur hat die Wurst zwei!
8. Learn German! Being bi-lingual helps prevent Alzheimer's! Wirklich!
9. German is the third most popular language in the world. It is official in 5 countries: Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein.
10. Die Deutsche Sprache oder Die Tütsche Sprache? The spelling 'Deutsch' was not finalized until sometime in the 18th Century. Martin Luther spoke of the tütsche Sprache. The Swiss (whose language is more closely related to the older middle German still say they speak Schyzertütsch (Swiss German). Swiss, while a dialect, can sound foreign to some German ears. Here are two examples of words that don't even have a German equivalent and a comparative sentence.
a. göötsche - to play with water
b. Guggihü - a nowhere land
c. Swiss over PA: Liebi Chunde und Chundinne! German same sentence: Liebe Kunde und Kundin! The Swiss makes it sound like they are saying "dear dogs and female dogs."
